چکیده
The use of steroid therapy in polymyalgia rheumatica and temporal arteritis is necessary and usually effective, but may mask coexisting disease. The importance of early consideration of other disorders in such patients is illustrated by three case histories.

Giant cell temporal arteritis associated with overlying basal cell carcinoma: co-incidence or connection?
Giant cell arteritis is a granulomatous vasculitis of large and medium sized arteries manifesting as temporal arteritis and/or polymyalgia rheumatica. The histological assessment of temporal artery biopsies is frequently encountered in anatomical pathology and has important diagnostic consequences in patients clinically suspected of having giant cell arteritis. We present an intriguing case of ...
متن کاملPolymyalgia rheumatica and temporal arteritis: evidence and guidelines for diagnosis and management in older people.
Polymyalgia rheumatica and temporal arteritis commonly present for the first time in older people. Guidelines for diagnosis, investigation and management are available but have largely been developed by rheumatologists from studies where older people have been excluded. It is not clear whether geriatricians care for a group of patients with different clinical presentations compared to those und...

OBJECTIVE To determine fluctuation in circulating von Willebrand factor (vWF) in the outcome of patients with temporal arteritis. METHODS Plasma vWF antigen concentrations were measured in 65 patients with biopsy proven temporal arteritis at different disease activity stages, in 12 with isolated polymyalgia rheumatica, and in 16 controls. Fourteen temporal arteritis patients underwent serial ...
متن کاملPolymyalgia rheumatica and temporal arteritis.

It is associated with a raised sedimentation rate (E.S.R.) and a mild hypergammaglobulinaemia, and women are affected more frequently than men. There is as yet no specific test for this condition, ...
متن کاملDevelopment of giant cell (temporal) arteritis in a patient 'adequately' treated for polymyalgia rheumatica.
A 70-year-old woman presenting with typical polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) and a normal temporal artery biopsy appeared to respond completely to low-dose prednisone therapy. A subsequent biopsy showing temporal arteritis with a normal sedimentation rate and no recurrence of myalgic symptoms emphasizes the unpredictable course of treated PMR and the need for continued clinical as well as laborator...
